for our christmas weekend with the family every member had to make an artwork. the result was an exhibition with vernissage. (just for the family) we had 60 pieces! I made a very small book, It's a christmas tree collection.
but! in the first image you can see a letter box, view box full of selfmade sculpted soldiers and war victims. This work was made by my cousin Lize, and also got my first vote. she is the very deserved winner of the 'Chielens-collection'!

an empty table, a full table and sinterklaas who came to visit us, the day after we gave our astrid lindgren pancake party. instead of giving us some presents, he asked us to give him money :) but it was for charity, for the music for life action of belgian radio station studio brussel. they collected a lot of money!

yesterday my birthday-week has started :) we celebrated it at home with my close family, a bit to early (my birthday is only tomorrow), but that's no problem for me, the longer i have the birthday feeling, the better! we ate 'hennepot', a tipical dish from poperinge. I know it doesn't look very appetizing, and yet it is! the first picture is one of the gifts I got from my parents. the brooch is from soki. thank you!

This afternoon we held in the academy of poperinge, our festive opening of the 'brede school' project. it was a show about 'heroes', with live music, live acting and live drawing. by me.

Yess! I have big news! My first book is out NOW! It is a booklet with CD, the children's choir of the Flanders Opera has rerecorded all the best known traditional Flemish children songs. Each song is accompanied by a drawing of mine.

we also made our own journalistic version of the game 'kubb'. I am always amazed when I see how well children can combine colors. maybe because I'm so bad in itself, haha.

for the older children, this year we worked around 'radio'. We made a broadcast of one hour, with own music, jingles, news, advertising, games and more. We built our own studio out of cardboard (think science of sleep), designed and silkscreened our own shirts.

last week, on our way to spend some time with my sister, we visited the dick bruna huis in utrecht. it's not that big, but definitely worth the visit! dick bruna is much more than just miffy. we bought a set of original stamps from the year 1969 and are very happy with it. the second picture shows his way of working.

This week I visited the exhibition on "Jacques Tati"in the Caermersklooster in Ghent. It was really worth it. So far I only saw the movie 'mon oncle', but all of his work is really great and the small exhibition stimulated me to see the rest. The next film on the program is 'jour de fête', can't wait.

Yesterday I spent the whole afternoon crafting with the kids, like every wednesday. But this time it was kind of special and very nice. When I was back in Ghent, the town lay under a bed of glistening snow. Pieter was making soup. Evening, we lit the fire and everything smoke to the Ardennes. It was a perfect day.

my spread page at 'de leeswelp', which is the only magazine in Flanders that is fully dedicated to books for young people. They give a monthly inventory of what is new and interesting on the children's books market. A while ago, I was one of the three winners of the first edition of an annual competition for young Belgian illustrators. The competition is called 'Goed Voor Druk', it's an initiative by 'De Leeswelp' and the 'VIC', the Flemish Illustrators Club. The jury, consisting of Chris Bulcaen, Sabien Clement, Jen de Groeve, Koen Sels and Klaas Verplancke, chose my work alongside of that of Korneel Detailleur and Karolien Vanderstappen.

finally we went to visit the exhibition of Tove Jansson. although the cartoon museum is rather boring and old-fashioned, the piece of moomin-land was still worth a visit. it struck us how wonderful and brilliant her pencil sketches often are, and how she loses a little magic while putting everything in ink.
